Meditation is Not Just a Duty

I sometime feel that the time we spend on devotional practices, going to temple, meditation etc. can become a routine, a duty to be performed before taking up other important tasks for the day if there is a lack of interest and inclination...

As I've been sharing with you this last week, in my decades as a spiritual teacher and practitioner I've seen the power meditation has to change people's lives -- and to expand our abilities to change the world around us.

I've also seen how all too often, despite the countless benefits that meditation can provide, these possibilities fail to materialize.

If you're like a lot of people I've worked with along the path, a satisfying and sustained meditation practice may feel elusive to you, no matter how determined you are.

I'd like to see that change, because a fully-embraced meditation practice is indispensable to spiritual practice -- and to life. And over the years, I've discovered a few simple shifts people can make to smooth the way for a much more direct route to the true ease and freedom that it can yield.

I hope you've seen my previous two emails, each of which details some of the most pervasive meditation myths and mistakes I've encountered -- illuminating the roots of many of our struggles with meditation.

Today, I'd like to share with you two more common "meditation mistakes" that are preventing many practitioners from discovering the deeper potentials this practice has to offer.

If you catch yourself in one of these habits, you can be sure that much more is possible in your meditation.

Meditation is Not an Escape From Life

Some people unwittingly use meditation as a refuge or "spiritual bypass." They escape into meditation to avoid facing or dealing with uncomfortable feelings or challenges.

This is a tricky misstep to detect sometimes, since "peace" or disengagement may appear preferable to (or even "more enlightened" than) the complexity or messiness of dealing with life's challenges.

People who seem detached may be perceived as having achieved an enviable distance from life -- but sometimes they're really just "checked out."

This approach won't produce the kind of results most people really want. It's not even truly meditation.

If you've found yourself trying to use meditation in this way, you may not be attending to things that fully meditating would give you the strength to meet head-on.

Real awareness meditation, while it may at times involve the practice of detachment during the practice, won't leave you "above it all" in real life. It will instead enable you to be responsive and clear right here in the trenches of life.

It will cultivate steadiness and presence in the face of any circumstance, without being disengaged in an unproductive way.

It's rare -- yet magnificently possible -- to be fully awake, showing up 100% for everything you might confront. Practiced properly and wholeheartedly, meditation develops that capacity.

True meditation is about being fully present with everything that is -- including discomfort and challenges. It empowers you to face truth and reality without hiding.

While meditation can help you to relinquish unhealthy attachment and grasping, you won't lose the direct engagement with life that makes you productive, creative and generative.

How to Avoid Falling Into a Meditation Rut

Even steady, experienced meditators make mistakes that can dull the radiant potential of the practice. Rote repetition of a single approach can drive you deep into a "meditation rut," where the practice loses any vitality and dynamism it once had.

If you've been meditating for years but aren't even sure why you're doing it any more, can't name a benefit you're experiencing, dread the practice, or simply treat it like a habit, this is probably something to consider.

Meditation for your mind and spirit is in some ways like exercise for the body. If you perform the same exercise repeatedly at the same level, it will cease to challenge you or produce results.

Doing the identical meditation every day for 20 years can be like taking the same daily walk at the same pace. It can become unsatisfying and also hold you back from the new and deeper places you could go by stretching yourself.

My Journey Into Freedom meditation program teaches a variety of approaches that require you to use your awareness in different ways -- in effect, a "cross-training" for the mind and spirit.

This eliminates the potential for getting "stuck in a rut" -- and turns your meditation practice into an ongoing journey of deepening awakeness and curiosity. There is literally no end to where you can go with this kind of meditation.

That's why I'm so excited to share it with anyone looking to start or improve a meditation practice -- and whose life aspirations would be uplifted by the expanded capacities meditation brings.

It's also why I wanted to share these observations about classic "meditation traps" -- and let you know that there's support available to help you break through the "ceiling" that may be limiting your practice.

I've put together a system that does an end-run around all the misguided context that detours so many meditation practices into the woods.

Journey Into Freedom is based on a form of meditation I've personally witnessed having the most impact on the most people. I've customized and refined this meditation into an instructive journey that brings about consistent, tangible results.

I'm so happy to be offering a self-paced meditation course that can end the false starts to a vibrant meditation practice -- and provide a dynamic new beginning to an evolving lifetime of meditation that really works.

You can learn all about it by visiting our program information page at the link below:

Journey Into Freedom: The Essential Meditation System to Cultivate Awareness, Clarity and Authentic Spiritual Awakening

If you join us by Sunday (August 28), you'll be able to join our fall cohort and gain access to three months of live guidance and support. You'll have opportunities to ask me questions and meditate together with others on this journey. I really look forward to connecting with you at the six live events we have planned.

And, if you'd like an opportunity to practice this accessible and dynamic form of meditation, be sure to check out the recording of Sunday's Meditation for Evolutionaries. Yesterday marked the second anniversary of this uplifting collective practice shared by thousands of people, which I've offered at no charge every month for the past two years. To celebrate our growing community, I led a special Meditation for Evolutionaries that builds on the insight and momentum emerging from my recent live meditation retreat. I hope you'll take this opportunity to taste the depth and vitality you can expect from all our meditation events and programs.

Warmly,

Craig Hamilton
